Forum Grist Masterpost: The Hunt is On!
Hmm, this is a real mystery. The only infurmation I could find on it was this mod post by epithetic:

"Your profile also displays your accumulated grist cache. Forum grist is independent from echeladder rank and can be earned through participating on the boards in a variety of vaguely specific ways. What ways you ask?"

Well, that was intriguing. Purrhaps we could piece this mystery together as a team?

A VOIDLY NOTE:
GAMZEE: Here I'll give a freebee for the grist thing. The automatic server update time is 12 am in BST. That's not really a secret because it's also the time age verifications happen.

If you do not receive a grist (i.e. for having 18 rep or a certain post count), remember that while some grist is only given by admins, most of our 'confirmed' grist is actually done by automation, and thus, you won't get that grist until the server checks go through.

OUR GRIST AND THEORIES SO FAR:

CONFIRMED:
Build Grist:
Redgate? Regdate. As in registration date. Be a member until the server update at 12 AM BST.

Caulk:
Be online for 4 days and 13 hours.

Chalk:
Tips and Tricks posting. Mod given.

Cobalt:
18 rep.

Cruxite Dowels:
RP a character quite well and be recognized for it. There is one type for each colour on the hemospectrum to support this as well as the kids' colours (which are swapped with their scratch counterparts as with canon). Mod given.

Quartz:
Make 431 posts.
Sources: epithetic, Airams, lots of other sources.
Confirmed on page 57.

Diamond:
Make 1111 posts.
Sources: sentientApocalypse, LostRefrain, KatsumiM

Coral:
Talk to a mod/admin.

Ice:
Win a Snowy Glo8es contest.

Ambeer
Win a Snowy Glo8es Contest.
Sources: KnoseDoge

Shale:
Gained by contribution to the Alchemy section of the boards. (Art, Fiction, etc.) Was also given to notable entries in the 1st Snowy Glo8es contest: Remember-off.

Ambrosia:
Mod given.
Sources: Litaris
Make a super cringeworthy Mary-Sue. Given to notable entries in the 2nd Snowy Glo8bes contest: Mary-Sue Menagerie.

IN PROGRESS:

Uranium:
Mod given.
Sources: LostRefrain, Void

Charcoal:
Rust:
Almost certainly for having an archived post/memo or being offline for a certain amount of time. Threads?
Sources: LostRefrain, centaurstesticle

Marble:
Threads?
Sources: John, LostRefrain, centaurstesticle. There are several more sources.

Serpentinite:
Mod given.
Sources: epithetic

Garnet:
Mod given. Perhaps for being funny?
Sources: epithetic, nepeat

Amber:
Mod given. Possibly for being a beta tester? This isn't the case. I think it has something do with being on the forums for a long time.
Sources: epithetic, centaurstesticle, Void

Gold:
Mod given.
Sources: epithetic

Artifact Grist:
We think it might have something to do with banning and unbanning your profile. Could also have something to do with memes. Sage is kind of a wild card. Mod given.
Sources: Sage, nepeat

Zillium:
? ? ?
Sources: nepeat

Steel:
Might be gained through helping others out a lot. It definitely has something to do with RPing. (Codmod confirmed that when they said Knose Doge could not get it since they don't RP.) Mod given.
Sources: centaurstesticle, a lot more sources now.

Heme:
Mod given.
Sources: centaurstesticle

Mercury:
Mod given.
Sources: centaurstesticle

Sources: Dave

Citrine:
Seems to do with conflict resolution, whether between people or forum issues? Mod given.
Sources: Void

Amethyst:
Sources: Void, probably many other sources by now.

Agate:
This might be for spending a long time creating a post/guide on Tips and Tricks.
Sources: Yung Venuz, Void

Iodine:
No fucking clue.
Source: Ehvann

Lead:
No clue. Glub has this, possibly for 100+ rep?
Source: Glub

Neon:
Fubar has this, probably for being Fubar.
Source: Fubar

SPECULATION/NEVER SEEN BEFORE:
Tar:
Source: Confirmed by epithetic. No current user on MSPARP has it.

Ruby:
Source: Said 'it's possible' by epithetic. No current user on MSPARP has it.

Sulfur:
Source: Said 'it's possible' by epithetic. No current user on MSPARP has it.

Thanks To:
  • Kudos to The All Mighty Bunny for saving Pixel some time looking through the code.
  • gojira86 for watching in the background.
  • epithetic for being infuriatingly fun and cryptic.
  • Void for editing, doing a little cleaning up, and updating.

RE: Forum Grist?
That's about the only way you'll ever have a chance of finding out, apart from becoming a mod. And mods, if they are worth the trusted position given to them, won't reveal how the grist system works. We are all Nannasprites about that.

Good luck for your treasure hunt. I'll be watching with a bowl of popcorn. Wink

I've rp'd Elfangor (Animorphs), Beekiller (anon), Perigeebeast (Troll Santa), Nanna, Signless/Sufferer.

RE: Forum Grist?
The descriptions when you hover over them are generally a hint. :33

Another hint is that it's currently difficult to get a lot of them as intended as they require manual intervention and time has been scarce.

RE: Forum Grist?
Hmm. I was inspired to create this memo after finding some new grist (coral) on my profile. However I'd just contacted centaurstesticle at the time so that probably has something to do with it.

RE: Forum Grist?
after seeing this i have a couple of theories
1. that the grist is earned from opening a memo in different areas of parp
or 2. that it's gained though a mod liking one of your memos, ideas, conversations, etc.

While Sollux it may have been a long time ago your actions about it still hurt.

Sounds plausible to me.
