Clusterstuck: When Sessions Collide

- CLUSTERSTUCK -

WHEN SESSIONS COLLIDE

The world as you know it is long gone.

Before you stands what was once your dwelling place, now a pile of unrecognizable ruin, every hole between the rocks and charred wood weeping an ominous, dark sludge. The things that once belonged to you lie scattered at your feet. This place you once knew is now strange and barren; even the sky has turned a sickly purple, painted by noxious fog. As your home, your planet, has gone to chaos, so have those of all the others. Everything – everyone – is doomed beyond saving.

It’s your fault this happened, and you know it. Everyone knows it. What a shame, you think to yourself. A shame that you wouldn’t even be able to care if you wanted to.

A smile creeps onto your face. Another day, another opportunity to die. You glance down at your robes, at the black Void symbol in the center of your dress. That symbol reminds you coldly of the tether that holds you here. If you were to die today, would it be ruled Just?

As much as you’d like it, the answer is no. You’ve tried. According to the powers that be, a failure to protect yourself and your peers from the unyielding Void is not grounds for a Just death. It could be that you will never die. When everything ends, you will remain. Perhaps the others will, too. That might not be so bad, but it sounds a little boring, so you’d rather pass if possible.

The Furthest Ring whispers to you from afar. It whispers your name. Your name. We haven’t yet disclosed your name. What was your name, again?

Dear Journal, today I saw...

No, no, no. Too bland. You scribble out furiously what you wrote, and determined to document your despair, you begin again. Dear Journal, it seems to us now that all is lost. There is no way around the blockade set by the Muse of Doom. Better. Much better. You bite your lip and stare down at the ground a dozen feet below, at the lifeless dirt that once gave care to a naturally grown garden. A sigh escapes your chest as you scribble down one more word.

FUCK.

There. That should do it. Deep down, you know there's no way words can do this justice. You've done well enough capturing the situation that your future self will be able to read it and remember this day. Why do you care so much? You ask yourself that in bitter frustration every day. You're doomed, aren't you? This is where you are, and this is where you'll stay. Each day is exactly like the last.

You take another look around, just to torture yourself. This was your best friend's planet. He was the most powerful out of all of you. He tried his very best to keep this place alive. Then... then he disappeared. It's all dead now, every last inch of it. You asked the cards to tell you where he was, but even they had no answers for you. Everything, you think miserably, is in the hands of higher powers. Who knows? Maybe they've got a plan.

With this in mind, you sign the day's entry...

... Signing off, Remi Barkley.

That's just about all the writing you can handle for now. Even great intellectuals such as yourself have their off-days.

Your name, as previously stated, is REMI BARKLEY. You like to consider yourself a MASTER AUTHOR, albeit one with a bit of a TEMPER on him. You're somewhat OVERDRAMATIC and NEEDLESSLY EDGY when it comes to trivial matters, but in the face of doom, you feel almost NUMB. Currently, your session seems to be GOING NOWHERE, and it will continue to do so FOREVER if action is not taken. If only you could take action.

You are an HEIR OF LIGHT -- at least, if your consorts are to be trusted. Your chumhandle is uninvitedUnbalance. It's made just a little evident by your style of writing that you've read a FUCKTON of books.

You take your phone from your pocket and check to see who’s online. There are only a few people you consider your “friends”. Those people are the ones who played your initial session with you, as well as another… well, another Light player who knows much more than you, although you hate to admit it.

Three of them are online. The other is… still missing. Whom shall you pester?

That's a good idea if you ever thought of one. Your fellow Light player has always been a great source of sanity and information -- sometimes even more than your fortune cards, if she's willing to disclose anything. You're willing to set aside your need to feel superior for just a moment to talk to her. After all, these are trying times.
